Thank you to everyone who came to see my trio at Harrow Arts Centre last week. It's always a pleasure to introduce our music to a new audience and it was wonderful to see some familiar faces amongst the crowd. We had a great time working out on a raft of new original material and dropped in standards by Brubeck and Monk for good measure. All in all, a fruitful night.

H-Wired: Peter Edwards Trio

Thursday 26 April, 8.00pm , The Studio, £12 / £10 110 mins

The Peter Edwards Trio is fast becoming one of the most exciting and dynamic trios to come out of London in recent years.

Bandleader Peter Edwards is the musical director for the Nu Civilisation Orchestra (formerly the Tomorrow's Warriors Jazz Ochestra) and also works with the Zara Mcfarlane Quartet, Nicola Emmanuelle and Rhythmica. This new ensemble mixes old and new, swing and metric manpulation, the blues and lush soundscapes, impressionistic lyricism and soul. Their performances re-engage with the infectious dance rhythms of jazz and capture the rich and diverse flavours of world music to create a sumptious musical feast.

As part of a new series, The Artful Diner does dinner with interesting characters and gives you the low-down…

My date for Tuesday night at Floridita was South African jazz singer Nicola Emmanuelle, who's performing there onValentine's Day. Yes, that’s right. Date onTuesday night. My thinking being, what better way to propel oneself through to Friday than with a rum cocktail or two midweek? (We discovered one cocktail so good Nicola declared it a “pour it over your boyfriend drink”, ie you should always have one on hand.)

Nicola was born into South African jazz royalty. Her parents were Nathan ‘Dambuza’ Mdledle, lead singer of the Manhattan Brothers and Louisa Manuel, a singer with the Woodpeckers. They moved from South Africa to London in 1961 and Nicola was born in Hackney.

Classically trained, the singer’s heart has always lain with jazz and soul. Highlights of her career include singing live for Mandela and on the soundtracks for films like The Constant Gardener and City of Angels, as well as working with Pete Townshend of The Who. She regularly performs live at The Savoy, Boisdale and for Floridita Live.

There's still time to see her work but you have to be quick because it finishes this afternoon (saturday 3rd December). For more details go to www.alexroberts.com. or order a catalog from info@alexroberts.fsnet.co.uk. Below are some pics from the gig and a few of Alex and I in front of my favourite painting.
